Tuesday May 9th, more than 60 EPFL students from various departments came to hear about the work of three invited EPFL/ETHZ spin-offs .
Inpher CEO Dr. Jordan Brandt and Chief Scientist Dr. Nicolas Gama began the round of presentations talking about Inpher, and their efforts to create technology for computation on encrypted data. Akselos core technology developer Dr. Jonas Ballani talked about their work towards creating a digital twin of large structures, and finally Dr. Martin Jaggi, co-founder of SpinningBytes, gave a presentation on how his company creates custom-made machine learning and data analytics software.
Connections were made and wine enjoyed at our Apero! Thanks to SIAM for funding and support, we hope to see you all again next year!
Tuesday May 9th, 15:15 in CM2, the EPFL Chapter of SIAM is organizing a workshop on Entrepreneurship in Mathematics and Computational Science
We’ve invited several EPFL/ETHZ start-ups to come and talk about the companies that they’re building and the work that they do. After a round of presentations, we’re serving an apéro where you will have the opportunity to talk with company representatives.

We are delighted to announce that that our chapter has now been acknowledged as an official student run association of EPFL with all the privileges that entails.
The first general assembly will be held on Tuesday the 24th of January at 17:00 in room MA C2 543. The chapter statues will be voted for, and signed by chapter officers.

Friday July 1st, 20 something students from the master and doctorate programs came to participate in the first such SIAM event at EPFL. The speakers presented exciting work of theirs on applications of mathematics and computational science to problems in Neuroscience, Tumor Growth modelling, and Stochastic Particle Transport among many other topics. After the talks, the chapter and friends enjoyed the sunny weather and spectacular views on the MA building 3rd floor terrace with apéro and wine from Négoce.

The first SIAM Graduate Research Day at EPFL will take place July 1st 15:00 in CM2 MA A3 30. 6 master students working with different applications of mathematics and computational science will each give a 20 minute talk presenting their recent work. After the presentations, we welcome all participants to an apéro with catering from Gina’s served at the MA building 3rd floor terrace. Do you feel like you don’t get enough practice in presenting your work? Are you a bit scared of your final thesis presentation? Or maybe you just want to show your superb research and presentation skills in front of your friends and professors?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions (or even if not), then the Graduate Research Day of the EPFL Chapter of SIAM is just for you!
What is it then? An opportunity to practice your presentation skills before your thesis defense, to get feedback on your work, and to enjoy a relaxing end-of-semester afternoon with friends.
Who can participate? Participation is open to all EPFL Master students, who did a project which broadly falls into the topics of Applied Mathematics, Computational Science and/or their applications. We particularly encourage students to present work done during their semester or Thesis projects. By signing up, you will automatically become a member of the Chapter (which is free).
When will it happen? On June 22nd July 1st 2016, 3-6 pm.
What will it look like?
How long should the presentation be? Each student will be allowed roughly 15-20 minutes to present an overview of their project to fellow students, this with 3-5 minutes of questions included. Final format will be announced in due time.
Will there be food? Of course! And some prizes as well!

What is the deadline for application? The registration form will be open until June 17th 2016.
Who is sponsoring the event? The event is organized by the executive committee of the EPFL Chapter of SIAM, and funded by the EPFL Section de Mathématiques and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
